Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited(NPCIL), wholly owned by the Government of India, designs, constructs, operates and maintains nuclear power stations across the country. With depleting fossil fuels reserves globally, and rising carbon footprint and the consequent environmental impact, NPCIL is playing a critical role in addressing India’s insatiable appetite for energy. With matured economies like the US, Germany, France and Japan taking a conservative approach post the Fukushima plant disaster in March 2011, NPCIL felt the need to reinforce its “safety first and production next” strategy in the 2010-11 Annual Report.
Demystifying nuclear power
We identified “Nuclear power: India’s sustainable route to low-carbon energy” as the broad theme to highlight NPCIL’s role towards achieving energy security for India. The idea was to ask the right questions leading up to the right answers. A minimalist design philosophy backed by infographics layered the narrative. A detailed “Strategic Review” section was included to demystify nuclear energy and make a case for its environmental and economic viability, especially in the Indian context. This section emphasised how nuclear power was safer than other conventional energy sources. The overarching message was why nuclear energy was the most sustainable among all available options.
Celebrating a 25-year long journey
The 2011-12 Annual Report was a celebration of NPCIL’s role in harnessing green energy sustainability while demonstrating the highest standards of safety for the past two-and-a half decades of its existence. The report also highlighted the Company’s contribution towards the environmental ecosystem as well as lives and livelihoods of communities surrounding its area of operations. The report also retraced NPCIL’s roots to 1944 when Dr. Homi Bhabha kick-started nuclear research in India through to 1987 when NPCIL was established to commercialise nuclear power.
